AppleCheeks: They Really Did Perfect Cloth Diapering

by Jennifer Lazarski

I first heard about AppleCheeks cloth diapers when I was pregnant with my daughter. A cute diaper that was invented by Canadian Mamas and manufactured in Montreal? They had my attention.

It wasn’t until we actually started using AppleCheeks on our newborn that I REALLY began to feel the love, though. I had purchased numerous brands of cloth diapers before my daughter was born to try out different brands and see which ones we liked, and it soon became clear which brand was our favourite. Even my husband who had been (very!) skeptical of cloth diapers loved them and refused to use any other style of diaper. Soon we began exclusively using AppleCheeks diapers and haven’t looked back!

Why do we love them?

#1 – Fit.
AppleCheeks come in 2 sizes, which makes their system pricier than some other one-size systems, but you really do get a perfect fit at every stage. We began using them when our daughter was about 10 lbs, and she wasn’t even on the smallest set of snaps! Size 1 can fit much smaller babies - the design of the diaper is quite unique and allows the tabs or “wings” to be pulled up to get a good fit even on the tightest snaps. These diapers also fit great up until potty training, and can be adjusted to fit babies over 35 lbs with the use of waist extenders. Unlike most other brands of diapers, AppleCheeks snaps can be fastened at varying (offset) levels at the legs and tummy, allowing them to fit both skinny babies and those with chunky tummies and/or thighs. AppleCheeks diapers also have a fourth elastic at the front which blocks blowouts, and can be especially helpful for older babies who may sleep on their tummies.

#2 – Canadian
As mentioned, AppleCheeks were invented in Canada and continue to be designed and produced right here. When you buy AppleCheeks you know that you are getting a superior quality product and supporting Canadian manufacturing.

#3 – Versatility
AppleCheeks have the unique ability to be used as either a pocket diaper (which does not need to be unstuffed prior to washing, by the way!) or an all-in-two, by simply laying the insert inside of the envelope cover. The all-in-two option really appealed to our family as a cheaper and less wasteful option, to be able to re-use covers. However, I love that we have the option to stuff our diapers. This is especially handy for overnight and convenient for babysitters and grandparents who prefer to use a one-step diaper. AppleCheeks diapers are also versatile in that they can be used with natural inserts (rayon from bamboo and cotton blend) as well as microterry inserts, to suit each family’s budget and preferences. AppleCheeks envelope covers can also be used as covers for fitted or pre-fold diapers.

#4 – Resale and Collector’s Value

AppleCheeks come in a number of cute regular line-up colours, but they are constantly releasing new and limited edition prints, and once a print is discontinued it becomes “hard-to-find.” These prints and colours are so sought after that they are often re-sold for more than retail, and have even been known to sell for as high as $250! Even with regular lineup colours, it is rare for used diapers to sell for less than 50% of the retail price.

Of course, whenever you choose cloth diapers for your little one you are making a wise decision, no matter the brand. But we do love our AppleCheeks!

  1. Great post! I think my husband's biggest selling point for AC's was that they unstuff themselves in the wash. He hates pulling out dirtied inserts! We are AC all the way in this house too!
